Burnaby, C.-B<\/b>. – Le R\u00e9seau pour l’enseignement en sciences sociale du Canada (RESSC) et la Korean War Legacy Foundation (KWLF) se sont associ\u00e9s pour organiser deux journ\u00e9es d’apprentissage et de comm\u00e9moration sur la guerre de Cor\u00e9e \u00e0 l’intention des enseignants canadiens \u00e0 Burnaby, en C.-B., les 2 et 3 ao\u00fbt 2023. Des anciens combattants et des dignitaires \u00e9taient pr\u00e9sents pour parler des r\u00e9percussions de la guerre de Cor\u00e9e, notamment l’honorable Yonah Martin, leader adjoint de l’opposition au S\u00e9nat, et le Dr Andrew Burtch du Mus\u00e9e canadien de la guerre. Cet \u00e9v\u00e9nement a \u00e9t\u00e9 rendu possible gr\u00e2ce au soutien g\u00e9n\u00e9reux du minist\u00e8re des Patriotes et des Anciens combattants (R\u00e9publique de Cor\u00e9e).<\/span><\/p>\n

Plus de 40 enseignants provenant de diff\u00e9rentes r\u00e9gions du Canada se sont r\u00e9unis en Colombie-Britannique pour le Congr\u00e8s mondial sur l’enseignement de la guerre de Cor\u00e9e. Ils ont abord\u00e9 la participation du Canada \u00e0 la guerre de Cor\u00e9e avec des v\u00e9t\u00e9rans de la guerre de Cor\u00e9e et ont appris comment engager efficacement leurs \u00e9l\u00e8ves dans l’apprentissage de la participation du Canada \u00e0 la guerre de Cor\u00e9e.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nouveau livre de ressources p\u00e9dagogiques<\/b><\/p>\n

L’\u00e9v\u00e9nement de cette ann\u00e9e c\u00e9l\u00e8bre la publication d’une nouvelle ressource p\u00e9dagogique – La participation du Canada \u00e0 la guerre de Cor\u00e9e : Enqu\u00eate, pens\u00e9e historique et action. Tous les participants au Congr\u00e8s mondial ont re\u00e7u une copie de la ressource, et le livre sera distribu\u00e9 \u00e0 travers le Canada lors des congr\u00e8s des associations membres du RESSC tout au long de l’ann\u00e9e scolaire 2023-2024. La ressource est bas\u00e9e sur l’enqu\u00eate et comprend des histoires d’anciens combattants de la guerre de Cor\u00e9e de tout le Canada, s\u00e9lectionn\u00e9es par des enseignants, pour les enseignants utilisant des questions et des activit\u00e9s engageantes.<\/span><\/p>\n

Le 3 ao\u00fbt, nous avons eu l’honneur de r\u00e9unir des anciens combattants de la guerre de Cor\u00e9e et des \u00e9ducateurs locaux afin que la guerre de Cor\u00e9e continue d’\u00eatre comm\u00e9mor\u00e9e et honor\u00e9e par les \u00e9ducateurs de tout le Canada. Les enseignants ont entendu directement des anciens combattants de la guerre de Cor\u00e9e : Jai Boong KIM, Ralph Da Coste et Ron Foyle.<\/span><\/p>\n

Invit\u00e9s internationaux<\/b><\/p>\n

Outre le personnel de la Korean War Legacy Foundation, enti\u00e8rement compos\u00e9 d’enseignants am\u00e9ricains, Wesley Hedgepeth, pr\u00e9sident du National Council for the Social Studies aux \u00c9tats-Unis, et Craig Thornhill, Kai\u0101rahi de la New Zealand History Teachers Association, qui commence \u00e0 cr\u00e9er sa propre ressource p\u00e9dagogique sur la guerre de Cor\u00e9e, ont \u00e9galement particip\u00e9 \u00e0 l’\u00e9v\u00e9nement. Burnaby, BC <\/strong>\u2014The Social Studies Educators Network of Canada (SSENC) and the Korean War Legacy Foundation (KWLF)\u00a0 partnered to put on two days of learning and commemorating about the Korean War for Canadian teachers in Burnaby, BC, August 2 and 3, 2023. Veterans and dignitaries were in attendance to share the impacts of the Korean War, including the Honourable Yonah Martin, Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Senate, and Dr. Andrew Burtch of the Canadian War Museum. This event was made possible thanks to the generous support of the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs (Republic of Korea).<\/p>

Over 40 teachers from across Canada gathered in BC\u00a0 for the World Congress on the Teaching of the Korean War. They learned about Canada\u2019s participation in the Korean War directly from Korean War veterans and learned how to effectively engage their students in learning about Canada\u2019s participation in the Korean War.<\/p>

New Teaching Resource Book<\/strong><\/p>

This year\u2019s event celebrates the publication of a new curriculum resource - Canada\u2019s Participation in the Korean War: Inquiry, Historical Thinking and Action<\/strong>.<\/a> All participants in the World Congress received a copy of the resource, and the book will be distributed across Canada at SSENC member association conferences throughout the 2023-2024 school year. The resource is inquiry based and includes Korean War veterans\u2019 stories from across Canada, selected by teachers, for teachers using compelling questions and engaging activities.<\/p>

Commemorative Events and Gala Dinner<\/strong><\/p>

At noon on August 2, participants participated in a wreath laying at the Burnaby Korean War memorial, and a gala dinner event at the Hilton Metrotown Burnaby. The events included Senator Yonah Martin and included His Worship, Mike Hurley, mayor of Burnaby, Consul General Jongho Kyun of the Korean Consulate in Vancouver, Director Seul-Ki Kim, Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, Republic of Korea and Dr. Jongwoo Han of the Korean War Legacy Foundation (USA).<\/p>

Veteran\u2019s Panel<\/strong><\/p>

On August 3rd, we were honoured to have local Korean War veterans and educators together in attendance so that the Korean War will continue to be remembered and honoured by educators across Canada. Teachers heard directly from veterans of the Korean War: Jai Boong KIM,\u00a0Ralph Da Coste, and Ron Foyle.<\/p>

International Guests<\/strong><\/p>

Along with the Korean War Legacy Foundation staff, entirely made of classroom teachers from the US, the event also included Wesley Hedgepeth, the president of the National Council for the Social Studies in the US, as well as Craig Thornhill, the Kai\u0101rahi of the New Zealand History Teachers Association, who are beginning to create their own educational resource on the Korean War. However, the real stars of the conference were the Korean pre-service teachers who joined the group for the event, and shared their own lessons that they had developed for use in Korea based on the Canadian experience. They brought a whole new energy to the room and many connections were made!<\/p>
