Cette discipline contribue mieux que toute autre au d\u00e9veloppement des comp\u00e9tences et des connaissances n\u00e9cessaires pour devenir des membres inform\u00e9s, responsables et engag\u00e9s de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9. Elle favorise la pens\u00e9e critique et la recherche en incitant les \u00e9l\u00e8ves \u00e0 poser des questions difficiles, \u00e0 analyser plusieurs points de vue et \u00e0 participer \u00e0 des discussions ouvertes sur des sujets controvers\u00e9s. Ce faisant, les \u00e9l\u00e8ves apprennent \u00e0 devenir de meilleurs citoyens et citoyennes en confrontant les injustices historiques et contemporaines et en contribuant \u00e0 b\u00e2tir une soci\u00e9t\u00e9 plus juste et inclusive.<\/p>\n<p>Bon nombre des livres vis\u00e9s par ces interdictions mettent en lumi\u00e8re les voix d\u00e9j\u00e0 marginalis\u00e9es de personnes 2SLGBTQ+. Ces retraits envoient un message gla\u00e7ant aux \u00e9l\u00e8ves qui voient leurs identit\u00e9s, leurs familles ou leur histoire effac\u00e9es des salles de classe et des biblioth\u00e8ques, ce qui mine leur sentiment de s\u00e9curit\u00e9, d\u2019appartenance et de dignit\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9cole.<\/p>\n<p>En cherchant \u00e0 interdire certains livres dans les biblioth\u00e8ques scolaires, le gouvernement de l\u2019Alberta s\u2019est inspir\u00e9 du mouvement des \u00ab droits parentaux \u00bb. Ce courant a gagn\u00e9 du terrain un peu partout en Am\u00e9rique du Nord, particuli\u00e8rement aux \u00c9tats-Unis, o\u00f9 des groupes comme Moms for Liberty exercent une influence consid\u00e9rable sur les politiques \u00e9ducatives qui marginalisent les communaut\u00e9s racis\u00e9es et 2SLGBTQ+. Le Canada n\u2019est pas \u00e0 l\u2019abri : dans l\u2019ensemble du pays, les gouvernements provinciaux, les conseils scolaires et les districts scolaires subissent des pressions de groupes comme Action4Canada et Parents for Choice in Education pour adopter des approches similaires.<\/p>\n<p>Bien que ces initiatives soient g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement pr\u00e9sent\u00e9es comme une fa\u00e7on de \u00ab prot\u00e9ger les enfants \u00bb, elles dissimulent souvent des tentatives plus profondes de r\u00e9primer la diversit\u00e9 des identit\u00e9s et des perspectives, notamment celles li\u00e9es au genre et \u00e0 la diversit\u00e9 sexuelle. Il est important de rappeler que la notion de \u00ab droits parentaux \u00bb n\u2019est pas explicitement reconnue dans la Charte canadienne des droits et libert\u00e9s ni dans les droits de la personne du Canada, alors que les droits des enfants sont clairement prot\u00e9g\u00e9s par la Convention des Nations Unies relative aux droits de l\u2019enfant ratifi\u00e9e par le Canada (Ganshorn, 2024).<\/p>\n<p>Le RESSC reconna\u00eet le r\u00f4le essentiel des parents dans l\u2019orientation de l\u2019\u00e9ducation de leurs enfants. Cependant, il est crucial de d\u00e9fendre les valeurs fondamentales d\u2019une soci\u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9mocratique qui constituent le c\u0153ur m\u00eame de toute \u00e9ducation en sciences sociales de qualit\u00e9 : la libert\u00e9 de pens\u00e9e, l\u2019acc\u00e8s \u00e0 une diversit\u00e9 de points de vue et le d\u00e9veloppement de l\u2019esprit critique.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019enseignement des sciences sociales n\u2019est jamais neutre. Il vise \u00e0 outiller les \u00e9l\u00e8ves pour comprendre des histoires, des cultures et des r\u00e9gimes de pouvoir complexes. Le retrait s\u00e9lectif de livres \u2014 notamment ceux qui relatent des exp\u00e9riences v\u00e9cues \u2014 sous pr\u00e9texte de \u00ab droits parentaux \u00bb ou d\u2019un flou autour de \u00ab contenus \u00e0 caract\u00e8re sexuel explicite \u00bb risque d\u2019aseptiser l\u2019enseignement. Cette approche limite la capacit\u00e9 des \u00e9l\u00e8ves \u00e0 devenir des citoyennes et citoyens inform\u00e9s, empathiques et engag\u00e9s, soit le principal objectif de l\u2019\u00e9ducation dans une d\u00e9mocratie.<\/p>\n<p>Ces politiques compromettent non seulement la qualit\u00e9 de l\u2019enseignement, mais elles sapent aussi l\u2019expertise professionnelle des enseignantes et enseignants et des biblioth\u00e9caires scolaires qui suivent d\u00e9j\u00e0 des proc\u00e9dures d\u2019\u00e9valuation rigoureuses pour s\u2019assurer que les ressources sont adapt\u00e9es au d\u00e9veloppement des \u00e9l\u00e8ves et sont pertinentes sur le plan p\u00e9dagogique. En interf\u00e9rant avec leur jugement professionnel, on cr\u00e9e un dangereux pr\u00e9c\u00e9dent et politise un processus qui devrait demeurer fond\u00e9 sur des preuves et centr\u00e9 sur les besoins des \u00e9l\u00e8ves.<\/p>\n<p>De plus, si la censure de livres devient normalis\u00e9e, elle ouvre la porte \u00e0 une ing\u00e9rence politique plus vaste en \u00e9ducation, o\u00f9 tout sujet remettant en question les points de vue dominants pourrait \u00eatre censur\u00e9. Il s\u2019agit d\u2019une menace fondamentale \u00e0 la libert\u00e9 acad\u00e9mique, \u00e0 l\u2019exactitude historique et \u00e0 l\u2019apprentissage d\u00e9mocratique.<\/p>\n<p>Nous devons veiller \u00e0 ce que l\u2019ensemble des \u00e9l\u00e8ves, quels que soient leur origine et leur parcours, aient acc\u00e8s \u00e0 des ressources qui refl\u00e8tent toute la diversit\u00e9 de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 canadienne et du monde.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c0 la lumi\u00e8re du nouveau projet de loi du gouvernement de l\u2019Alberta visant \u00e0 restreindre les droits des \u00e9l\u00e8ves transgenres, et appuy\u00e9 par l\u2019intention d\u00e9clar\u00e9e de recourir \u00e0 la clause d\u00e9rogatoire, l\u2019urgence de d\u00e9fendre une \u00e9ducation inclusive et d\u00e9mocratique devient encore plus \u00e9vidente. It is the school subject that best supports the development of the skills and knowledge needed to become informed, responsible, and actively engaged citizens. It promotes critical thinking and inquiry, helping students ask challenging questions, analyze multiple perspectives, and engage in open discussions about controversial topics. In doing so, students in social studies become better citizens by confronting historical and contemporary injustices and helping to build a more just and inclusive society.<\/p><p>Many of the books targeted for removal center the already marginalized voices of 2SLGBTQ+ individuals. These removals send a chilling message to students who see their identities, families, or histories erased from classroom and library spaces and undermine their sense of safety, belonging, and dignity in schools.<\/p><p>With its attempt to ban certain books from school libraries, the Government of Alberta was taking a page out of the \u201cparental rights\u201d playbook. This movement has gained political traction across North America, particularly in the United States, where groups such as Moms for Liberty have become influential in shaping education policy that marginalizes racialized and 2SLGBTQ+ communities. Canada is not immune, and provincial governments and school boards and districts across the country are increasingly facing pressure from groups such as Action4Canada and Parents for Choice in Education to adopt similar approaches.<\/p><p>Although these efforts are usually framed as protecting children, they mask deeper attempts to suppress diverse identities and perspectives, particularly those related to gender and sexual diversity. Importantly, while the concept of \u201cparental rights\u201d is not explicitly recognized under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms or in Canadian human rights law, children\u2019s rights are clearly protected by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, which Canada has ratified (Ganshorn, 2024).<\/p><p>While SSENC supports the essential role that parents play in guiding their children's education, it is critical to uphold the foundational values of a democratic society, which are central to any quality social studies education: freedom of thought, access to diverse perspectives, and the fostering of critical inquiry.<\/p><p>Social studies education is never neutral. It empowers students to understand complex histories, cultures, and systems of power. The selective removal of books, particularly those that explore lived experiences, under the guise of \u201cparental rights\u201d or the vague labeling of \u201csexually explicit content\u201d risks sanitizing education. This limits students\u2019 ability to grow into informed, empathetic, and engaged citizens, the primary goal of education in a democracy.<\/p><p>These policies not only compromise educational quality, they also undermine the professional expertise of teachers and teacher-librarians, who already follow well-established review processes to ensure materials are developmentally appropriate and educationally sound. Interfering with their professional judgment sets a dangerous precedent and politicizes what should be an evidence-based, student-centered process.<\/p><p>Moreover, if book bans become normalized, it opens the door to broader political interference in education where any topic that challenges dominant views may be subject to censorship. This poses a fundamental threat to academic freedom, historical accuracy, and democratic learning.<\/p><p>We must ensure that all students, regardless of background, have access to materials that reflect the full diversity of Canadian society and the world.<\/p><p>In light of the Alberta government\u2019s newly proposed legislation curtailing the rights of transgender students, supported by the planned use of the notwithstanding clause, the urgency of defending inclusive, democratic education becomes even more apparent. These actions are part of the same movement to restrict identities, perspectives, and knowledge in schools, and they deepen our concern for the wellbeing of students and educators across the country.<\/p><p>SSENC strongly supports the autonomy of teachers and teacher-librarians to do the work they have steadfastly trained and committed their lives to.
