Teaching and learning about the history of genocide is a powerful tool to counter hate and discrimination in the world. Genocide education is proven to promote critical thinking and empathy towards others. It also teaches about the warning signs that can lead to mass murder.
The Foundation for Genocide Education ensures that the history of genocide and the steps leading to it are taught in high schools across Canada. We collaborate with governments and pedagogical experts on groundbreaking resources about genocide to support educators.
The new online guide, ‘Studying Genocide’, features case studies of nine significant 20th century genocides, including the cultural genocide of Canada’s First Nations, definitions of the stages leading to genocide,
along with customizable teaching plans and testimonial videos.
We also offer schools powerful in-person and online presentations given by survivors of genocide or their descendants. To enable students in areas where we cannot visit to benefit from these stories, we now offer a
selection of filmed presentations in our Presentation Video Archive.
