President’s Message

Rachel Collishaw

Critical thinking is the most challenging and rewarding part of teaching social studies. In this issue you’ll find research-based articles, inspiration, and classroom tested ideas to get your students reading more deeply, using tools of critical thinking and avenues to learn more yourself or find those resources that you need for the next class.

Our member associations continue their activities including both spring and fall conferences, and SSENC members continue to provide support, resources and connections to teachers where they are. You can read the update from the New Brunswick Social Studies Educators’ Network, on their launch and participation in the annual council day in early May. The Ontario History and Social Science Teachers’ Association, with l’Association des enseignant.es des sciences humaines de l’Ontario are hosting a late May conference. Many more of our member associations will hold fall conferences, so watch for announcements and updates in the next issue of Salon.

Over the summer, our executive will be holding our annual elections, and we are looking forward to expanding our capacity as we support, connect and engage with our member associations. We are looking to secure our long term sustainability as an organization, and continue to provide the connections and support that social studies teachers need across Canada.

We are looking forward to beginning a new project to create teacher discussion guides for the award-winning book, The Valley of the Birdtail, thanks to funding from the Canada History Fund. We will also be starting work on a small project to support world history teachers on the topic of Korean women’s lives, thanks to funding from the Academy of Korean Studies, and there will be opportunities next school year to pilot and test out these resources. Please contact your SSENC director if you are interested in getting involved.

Our existing resources, Learning about Trust, Humans of the House and Canada’s Participation in the Korean War continue to be available for free in both English and French on the SSENC website.

The next issue of Salon will be on the theme of Media Literacy and the deadline for submissions of articles and advertising is July 31, 2025.
