SSENC Fall Conferences
Greg Neumann
The Social Studies Educators Network of Canada (SSENC) is excited to be present this Fall at our member provincial associations’ fantastic professional development opportunities across the country! Look for our booth on the 24th of October at the B.C., Manitoba and Nova Scotia Social Studies Teachers’ Association events. Additionally, SSENC will be engaging with P.E.I. teachers on November 6th and 7th.
In British Columbia, BCSSTA is partnering with host SFU (Faculty of Arts and Sciences and Faculty of Education) and Global Civic Policy Society to bring a wide array of workshops and a speaker series (both in-person and online) with political and economic journalist Andrew Coyne topping the bill as the keynote speaker. The theme is “Canadian Affairs – Now For Something Completely Different” – a description of the speaker series presenters and schedule can be found here. SSENC will be there to share all our partners’ contributions to Social Studies education in Canada!

In Manitoba, MSSTA has aligned their professional development day and journal (“Democracy Depends on It: Social Sciences Education”), both dedicated to the theme of “Active and Responsible Democratic Citizenship”. Delve into our ideas of what it means to be a “good” citizen in a world where political, economic, environmental, technological, and social changes challenge our democratic institutions. Join keynote, Carol Off, whose recent book looks at how key words including democracy, freedom and truth are distorted and weaponized and asks whether we can reclaim their value. Gather with your colleagues at Winnipeg’s Chief Peguis Middle School, and drop by the SSENC booth to connect with our nation-wide partners!
In Nova Scotia, SSTA members will once again congregate at the campus of Saint Mary’s University in Halifax to attend the Social Studies Conference, part of the NSTU Professional Associations annual conference day. Join keynote, two-time Commonwealth Scholar Dr. Jonathan Fowler from the university’s Department of Anthropology who brings both traditional and hi-tech archaeological methods to improve our understandings of past places and events. His latest book, ‘Diaries of the Acadian Deportations’ comes out in the Fall as well! The theme will be “Cultivating Creative Connections” and a wide array of workshops will be there to inspire your teaching this year! SSENC would love to connect with you and share our partners’ contributions to Social Studies education in Canada!
