SSENC is pleased to announce the release of our new video: Teaching the Korean War. This professional learning video gives teachers a taste of what is in the inquiry lessons. We hope that our members will be able to use the video to showcase the resource for colleagues, and to make connections to their own teaching and learning context.
In February 2020, SSENC began a project to create a teaching resource with our partners at The Korean War Legacy Foundation, and with the support of Senator Yonah Martin. The resulting resource was published in June 2024: Canada’s Participation in the Korean War: Inquiry, Historical Thinking, and Action.
In this video, the six authors discuss what they learned in the process, what’s in the free resource, and why it is still important for our students to learn about the Korean War.
In the video, you will meet the cross-Canada team:
- Rachel Collishaw, lead author from Ontario.
- Jennifer Tweedie from the Northwest Territories, author of the elementary inquiry: How can I best remember the Korean War?
- Helen Smith-MacPhail from Prince Edward Island, author of the middle years inquiry: What do different stories tell us about the Korean war?
- Lise Proulx from Québec, author of the secondary inquiry: Was the Korean War significant for French Canadians?
- Kevin Lopuck from Manitoba, author of the secondary inquiry: Is peace possible in Korea?
- Robert Jardine from Saskatchewan, author of the secondary inquiry: Was Canada’s Participation in the Korean War successful?
This video was supported by the Academy of Korean Studies, 2023 Understanding Korea Project.
